Free writing or flow writing is a great way to actually start writing. Then, after writing for a set amount of time – maybe 15 or 20 mins – whatever is best for you, put it aside and come back to it later, perhaps even on another day.
- Check Spellings. Correct them as necessary.
- Check Grammar. Again, correct this as necessary.
- Read it aloud to yourself. You can even record it and play it back.

By using these three tip, you will notice an immediate improvement in the quality of your writing.
I tried reading my writing aloud to myself this week. Had to laugh. Searching for the right words, I thought I’d hit on the perfect combination. But listening to myself, I could hear where I was just droning on.
To improve your writing, it really helps to put yourself in the reader’s place and think of what she may be looking for.
